After a thrilling final day of competition at the 2024 Paris Olympics, the United States and China both finished with 40 gold medals. It’s the first time there has ever been a tie for most gold medals at the Summer Olympics.
China took an early gold medal on Sunday as Li Wenwen won the top medal in women’s weightlifting (+81kg). The United States followed that with a gold of its own as Jennifer Valente defended her women’s omnium title in cycling.
The Americans then secured their 40th gold in the last event of the Olympics in women’s basketball. The United States had to pull off a 10-point second-half comeback in a thriller over France to win their eighth consecutive Olympic gold.
The U.S. team’s success extended well beyond the top tier of the podium. The total tally of 126 medals is the most for the Americans in the Summer Olympics since the 1984 Games in Los Angeles.
The next Summer Olympics will be hosted by Los Angeles in 2028.
