How dramatic was Friday’s flash flooding across the Southern Tier and northern Pennsylvania?

Water levels in Tuscarora Creek didn’t even reach half a foot when residents in South Addison went to bed Thursday night. By 3 p.m. Friday afternoon, though, waters raged over 12 feet high and forced the evacuation of residents across the area.

Several other towns in southern Steuben County were ordered to evacuate as the county issued a state of emergency due to dangerous floodwaters that threatened homes and washed away roads in some areas.

Tuscarora Creek hit the moderate flood stage, just shy of reaching the major flood stage of 13 feet, according to the NOAA. Classifications advance from the action stage to minor, moderate and major flood stages. Thresholds for each level vary by water body.

The Canisteo River in West Cameron also reached the moderate flood stage after rising from 3.71 feet Thursday night to 17.77 feet at 8:30 p.m. Friday. The Cohocton River at Bath hit the minor flood stage at 11.22 feet Friday. Many other waters in the region hit the action stage.

Here’s how much major water levels in rivers and creeks across the Southern Tier rose from Thursday to Friday and into Saturday, in some cases.

Flood waters rushed over roads and washed away some areas in southern Steuben and Allegany counties Friday as the remnants of Tropical Storm Debby dumped several inches of rain on the region Aug. 9, 2024.
