A quirky quarrel has bubbled up in Brooklyn over a sidewalk pond filled with goldfish, with some seeing it as a charming addition to a pavement, and others worried about the welfare of the fish.
The conflict began in Bedford-Stuyvesant, when, according to The New York Times, some locals noticed that a leaky hydrant was creating a little pond around it near the corner of Hancock Street and Tompkins Avenue. Seizing the opportunity to “do something different for the community,” they decided to put some goldfish to the water.
What for some might have been a charming way to beautify a sidewalk was for others a cause of concern. Max David and Emily Campbell raised their issue on social media about the conditions the fish were living in.
Determined to help, Campbell decided to rescue the fish from the pond. She shared her experience on Reddit, recounting how a man stopped her during the rescue and “yelled a bit” about her “stealing the fish.”
