Late filmmaker Basu Chatterjee made a number of iconic movies in his career. Some of them include, Piya Ka Ghar, Rajnigandha, Chhoti Si Baat, Baton Baton Mein, Ek Ruka Hua Faisla, Chameli Ki Shaadi, etc. But the renowned director also left a major impact in the world of Hindi television through his classic detective show Byomkesh Bakshi. The series starred Rajit Kapur in the titular role and KK Raina as his best friend and partner Ajit. It was first aired on Doordarshan in 1993 and has had a few re-runs. But the show is still being seen and admired online.

In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Hungama, KK Raina fondly looked back at Byomkesh Bakshi while talking about his teleplay Peechha Karti Parchhaiyaan. On why the Doordarshan show continues to be a rage online, the actor said, “The beauty of Byomkesh Bakshi lies in its simplicity. There are no complications. The stories are strong and Basu Chatterjee ji narrated them in a very simple manner. This is proved from the fact that even today people fondly remember Byomkesh Bakshi.”
He added, “Whenever I meet people, they either mention Katha Sagar or Byomkesh Bakshi. The reason for this is that its characters and the narrative are real. It hasn’t been embellished in any way. It doesn’t have things like jazzy camerawork, like it happens today. People say that they are able to identify themselves with the characters. They find them their own. This is the beauty of Byomkesh Bakshi.”
KK Raina also praised Basu Chatterjee’s collaborative nature and the freedom he gave to his actors. “What to say about Basu da?” he said. “He was an exceptional director. It was an honour for actors to work with him. He used to discuss the scenes a lot with us before shooting them. He used to explain a scene and then give us the freedom to do it our way. Whenever me and Rajit worked out a scene to do in a particular way, he never refused. In fact, he used to say that our inputs add on to the show.”
Byomkesh Bakshi was based on the collection of stories of the same name by the legendary Bengali author Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay.
