NBL’s 36ers abruptly sack head coach Scott Ninnis – MASHAHER

The Adelaide 36ers have parted ways with head coach Scott Ninnis two weeks into the first pre-season of his two-year NBL contract.

Club management met with club legend Ninnis to terminate his contract on Monday morning, installing lead assistant coach Mike Wells to the top job for the season that begins next month.

The 36ers will hold a press conference on Monday afternoon to explain their shock decision, with a club statement revealing Ninnis may remain at the club in another capacity.

“Club management met with Scott Ninnis this morning to inform him he has been released from his role as head coach of the Adelaide 36ers with immediate effect,” a statement read.

“The club will make a full statement in due course including potentially a new role within the club for Ninnis.”

The Sixers’ coach between 2008 and 2010, Ninnis signed a two-year deal to return in a full-time capacity from the upcoming 2024-25 season after impressing as interim coach last season.

Ninnis won eight of 15 games after taking over from embattled former boss CJ Bruton midway through last season, though the Sixers ultimately missed finals by one win and percentage.

As a player, Ninnis guided the 36ers to NBL titles during the 1986 and 1998 seasons, also playing for South East Melbourne Magic in their first title win in 1992.

Adelaide have signed former NBA big man Jarell Martin for the upcoming season, with Cairns Taipans forward Lat Mayen another key acquisition.
