The 2024 Paris Olympics ended on Sunday. For the athletes who won medals, they’ll return home to more than just cheers.
Most medal winners will be paid by their country for each gold, silver and bronze they bring home. Pay varies by country with some paying in the tens of thousands and some in the hundreds of thousands.
Which athletes earned the biggest paydays at the Olympics who was the United States’ top earner?
The U.S.’s pays $38,000 per gold, $23,000 per silver and $15,000 per bronze and their top earner was swimmer Torri Huske. She won three gold and two silver medals to earn $160,000 at the Summer Games.
The U.S. pays its athletes on a lower scale compared to other countries like Hong Kong which paid $768,000 for each of the gold medals won by fencers Vivian Kong and Cheung Ka-long.
Siobhan Bernadette Haughey added two bronze medals in the pool which netted her $384,000.
Veddriq Leonardo and Rizki Juniansyah earned $300,000 from Inodenisa for their golds in sport climbing and weightlifting.
Léon Marchand had a great showing for the host country winning four gold medals and one bronze to make $362,000. France pays $85,000 for gold,$43,000 for silver and $22,000 for bronze.
Chinese swimmer Pan Zhanle earned $357,500 for winning two golds and one silver medal in the pool.
