Hotel ordered to discard egg, cheese and bacon wraps – MASHAHER


LANSING — When county health inspectors visit local restaurants, they document problems that need addressing to meet standards set by Michigan food codes and law.

The most serious problems are considered priority violations, which present potential health hazards and should be corrected immediately. Priority foundation violations do not present immediate health hazards but should be corrected in a timely manner. Follow-up inspections and reports may consequently happen.

In most cases, the violations are corrected, and this information isn’t an indication that violations at any establishment are still an ongoing issue.

Here are the most serious violations for restaurants in Ingham County during the last two weeks of July. Reports for the first two weeks were published earlier this month.

Two priority violations and one priority foundation violation were found at:

Jet’s Pizza, 1640 Haslett Road, Haslett

“A direct connection exists between the sewage system and a drain from the three-compartment sink rinse andsanitize compartments. Correction: Design the sewage system in a manner that would preclude a direct connection between the sewage system and the drain from which food is placed. Cut/lift the drain line to provide an adequate air gap above the flood rim of the floor sink.” With some exceptions, state law indicates “a direct connection may not exist between the SEWAGE system and a drain originating from EQUIPMENT in which FOOD, portable EQUIPMENT, or UTENSILS are placed.” An employee’s tobacco products were being stored on top of flour bags and empty pizza boxes. Corrected. Spray bottles of chemicals were not labeled with contents. Corrected.

Two priority violations were found at:

Eden United Brethren Church, 1938 Eden Road, Mason

A test kit for “Quintenary Ammonium” was not available, and a dish machine was not reaching upwards of 160 F and did not have any sanitizer. “Correction: Adjust the water temperature so the hot water is 180 degrees F or above or have the unit serviced immediately.”

One priority violation and three priority foundation violations were found at:

Courtyard by Marriott, 2710 Lake Lansing Road, Lansing

A three-door refrigerator in the front service area was 70 degrees F and not on. An inspector ordered that the egg, cheese and bacon wraps get discarded.

Aloha Cookin’, 350 Albert Ave., East Lansing

Sanitizer was not being dispensed properly from the dishwasher. Utensils were damaged from use, not easily cleanable.

Lucky’s Steakhouse, 3554 Okemos Road, Okemos

“Observed chlorine chemical sanitizing concentration in kitchen dish machine at less than 10 ppm (parts per million), as tested today. … Correct by ensuring that dish machine is sanitizing with chlorine at a level of 50-100 ppm.”

One priority violation was found at:

Asian Taste, 132 S. Cedar St., Mason

Meat and vegetables in prep cooler were not registering at the standard of at or below 41 degrees Fahrenheit. “Repair may be necessary.”

Coral Gables, 2838 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing

At least one dish machine was not sanitizing properly, and dishes were not being sanitized. Corrected.

Kentucky Fried Chicken, 6600 S. Cedar St., Lansing

Cole slaw and shredded cheese were observed in cold holding unit, over ice, at 50-56 degrees F, over the cold standard of at or below 41 degrees F.

Imperial Garden, 147 W. Maple St., Mason

“Food in prep cooler reading from 47 F to 49 F, ambient air temperature at 49F,” which is over the cold standard of at or below 41 degrees F for potentially hazardous food.

Medina’s Take Out Mexican Restaurant, 123 W. Main St., Stockbridge

Food in prep cooler being held at 33 to 36 degrees F. Equipment may need repairing. “PIC is aware they need to be using time as a control until proper repairs are made.”

New Daily Bagel, 309 S. Washington Square, Lansing

Sliced cheese in cooler was being cold held at 44 degrees F, or a few degrees over the standard of at or below 41 degrees.

Ozzy’s Kabob, 3536 Meridian Crossing Drive, Okemos

“Observed time/temperature controlled for safety foods in the beverage cooler at the wait station, withtemperatures over 41 degrees F, during the inspection, as follows: opened mango juice at 49 degrees F – labeled’refrigerate after opening’ and Tahini sauce that was in portion cups present in cooler overnight. Cooler ambientair temperature at 53 degrees F, at time of inspection. PIC was directed by inspector to verify temperatures of TCS food in the cooler and to discard the temperature controlled for safety food that was at improper cold holding temperatures and relocate temperature controlled for safety food that was still at proper cold holding temperatures to other units that were capable of proper cold holding, as they report this is facility’s corrective action procedure for food held at improper cold holding temperatures for unverifiable amount of time. IF foods do not require cold holding, they do NOT need to be discarded (bread, canned and bottled beverages, etc).”

Panda Express, 439 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing

Chopped cabbage in pan stored above other pans in top load of the preparation refrigerator was 46 degrees Fahrenheit. Food items in another refrigerator was also 46 degrees F. The thermometer in the unit said it was 45 degrees F.

Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers, 301 E. Grand River Ave., East Lansing

“The sanitizer concentration for QT in the 3-comp is at >500ppm. Correction: Use test strips to measure proper sanitizer concentration and adjust the concentration accordingly.”

Starbucks, 6715 S. Cedar St., Lansing

Cold brew and nitro cold brew in a cooler was “being cold held” at 70 degrees F, nearly 30 degrees over the standard of at or below 41 degrees for potentially hazardous food.

One priority foundation violation was found at:

El Catrin Taco Shop, 1620 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing

“Observed some pans of food in the walk-in cooler exceed the 7- day shelf life. Correction: Must count the day the food is prepared or the package is open. Example- prepared 7/10/ then expires 7/16.”

Graze Craze, 2315 Jolly Road, Okemos

There were two damaged cans of fruit on a shelf. “Correction: Discard/return to supplier for credit, any damaged cans.” Corrected at time of inspection.

The Urban Cup, 2225 E. Grand River Ave., Lansing

No quaternary ammonia test strips.
