Italy beat USA in straight sets to win gold and their first ever women’s volleyball medal.
Paola Egonu top scored for Italy with 22 points as they denied USA back-to-back golds in the event.
Italy, who are the world number ones, had never previously been past the quarter-finals at the Olympics.
The bronze medal was won by Brazil, who beat Turkey in four sets.
