“Twisters” is barreling towards streaming. The Glen Powell-led action-romance, also starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, is now available to rent/purchase on Prime Video and Apple TV+ for $19.99.
The film became an immediate smash hit upon its release in theaters last month, taking home an impressive $81.25 million during opening weekend — far above expectations, and propelling it to blockbuster status. In addition to benefitting from nostalgia — “Twisters” is a standalone sequel to the 1996 disaster epic of the same name — it was also hugely popular on 4DX screens, boosting viewership from those appealed by an immersive experience.
In “Twisters,” Edgar-Jones plays Kate Cooper, a retired tornado chaser who returns to work with an old college friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) on a new team. Glen Powell plays Tyler Owens, a social media-famous storm chaser, known as the “Tornado Wrangler.” There are no characters that carry over between the movies, nor surprise family ties.
Billed as a “new chapter” of the original, the film is directed by Oscar nominee Lee Isaac Chung, known for his film “Minari,” which shared an agricultural setting and little else with “Twisters.” Along with Powell and Edgar-Jones, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack and Maura Tierney round out the cast.
In his review of the film, Variety film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote that Powell and Edgar-Jones “lead a sequel full of state-of-the-art storms, but it’s less awesome than the original,” continuing that “it follows the template of the ‘original ‘Twister,’ yet 30 years of real-life storm-chaser footage has given Chung’s tornado thriller a higher bar to clear.”
