LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Las Vegas Metropolitan police are asking families to stay aware after they said three students were robbed near three different local high schools this week.
“We haven’t had nothing like this before,” Spring Valley High School student Nicky Divsalar told 8 News Now.
Divsalar was one of several high school students who shared his concerns with 8 News Now after several reports of robberies.
“We came out of first period,” he recalled. “We were walking around, and saw a bunch of cops.”
Metro Police officers said a teenage boy was arrested at a gas station near Flamingo Road and Buffalo Drive Wednesday after his vehicle matched the description of one used in several robberies.
“I can understand how concerning this can be,” LVMPD Deputy Chief Jose Hernandez said of the crimes. “Particularly for our kids.”
Deputy Chief Hernandez spoke about the incidents during a news conference on Wednesday. He called them ‘isolated crimes of opportunity.’
“Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, in conjunction with Clark County School Police and all other police departments in the valley,” he added. “We take our students’ safety very very seriously.”
Though the main person officers said they were searching for is now in custody, Deputy Chief Hernandez encouraged children and families always to be aware.
“It’s important to remind your kids,” he explained. “That if we see something it’s important to report.”
The two students who spoke with 8 News Now said that even though the school year had just started, they decided to change things.
“At least have a plan,” Spring Valley student Niko Hil said. “If something like that happens to you.”
They told 8 News Now they don’t want to find themselves in any kind of scary situation.
“Just like be ready for anything,” Hil concluded.
Metro Police said there was also a fourth attempted robbery, but nothing was taken in that case.
