STORY: :: Archaeologists uncover remains dating back about 3,800 years

:: La Libertad, Peru

:: Feren Castillo, Head archaeologist / Valle de Viru project

“For such a small area, finding four burials shows us that there are likely many more here. And that gives this space an important value as well, because people wanted to be buried in the temples.”

The bundles were found amid stone and clay walls near a valley in the province of Viru, La Libertad region, a territory that hosts various important civilizations of ancient Peru.

The finding happened a month after 800-year-old remains belonging to 11 high-class people were found near the Chan Chan archaeological site, which served as the capital of the Chimu civilization, on the northern coast.

Peru is home to dozens of ancient archaeological sites. Around 500 years ago, it saw the rise of the Inca culture, which dominated from the south of Ecuador and Colombia to central Chile.
