Here are news, updates and highlights from the second round in Memphis, Tennessee (reminder: the top 50 in FedExCup points after this week’s event qualify for the BMW Championship):
Justin Rose nearly jars approach in shooting 66
Rose almost had a slam-dunk eagle at the par-4 17th on Friday. He made the birdie putt, however, to shoot his second straight 66 and reach 8 under, three off the lead.
Hideki Matsuyama a birdie machine in Memphis
Matsuyama has made 14 birdies through two rounds, to only three bogeys. He’s tied at the top with Denny McCarthy, who is dealing with some pain this week:
Scottie Scheffler keeps pace as Xander Schauffele stalls
Scheffler followed his 66 with a 65 to move to 9 under for the tournament, two off the lead. Schauffele had five birdies, two bogeys and a double in shooting 69. He’s at 5 under and outside the top 10.
Denny McCarthy, Viktor Hovland look to lock up spots at BMW
McCarthy is taking no chances on losing his spot in next year’s signature events. Currently 45th in FEC points, he shot 63 in Round 2 to move into first place when he signed his card.
Hovland, last year’s FEC champ, also shot 63. He entered the week 57th in points and is currently inside the top 5 in the tournament.
The defending FedExCup champion making a move
Viktor Hovland, who has struggled for the majority of the season, turned in 5-under 30 to reach 5 under in Round 2, three off the current lead.
