There was a reason why Vedaa and Khel Khel Mein decided to arrive on Thursday. Apart from the fact that it was the big Independence Day holiday, there were also a series of holidays in days to follow. With the big day falling on Thursday, it was like a mini holiday season with many expected to take an off day from work on Friday. Then there was the regular weekend factor of Saturday and Sunday. Monday was set to be big again due to Rakshabandhan and though from Tuesday to Thursday there were regular days coming, the second weekend was to be followed by Janmashtami partial holiday on Monday.

That’s the reason why once Pushpa 2 and Singham Returns changed their plans from August 15 arrival, films like Stree 2, Khel Khel Mein and Vedaa announced their plans. While the first film had the sequel advantage, the other two were special since they marked (yet another) clash of Akshay Kumar and John Abraham on Independence Day weekend after Gold & Satyameva Jayate and Mission Mangal & Batla House.

However, while that did sound exciting, none of the two films would have imagined the kind of euphoria that Stree 2 would bring and in the end emerge as the first major choice of the audiences and that too by a distance. The first issue came at the time of screen allocation itself and then by the time advance bookings opened, it was crystal clear that the other films in question would need to build their audiences over a period of time instead of doing first day wonders.

As a result, just a little over Rs. 10 crores came between the two films and while Vedaa was better at Rs. 6.75 crores, Khel Khel Mein was lesser at Rs. 5.23 crores. Though these are well made films, the numbers are indeed low for the credentials that they carry and now one waits to see how the collections move right till Monday as this is where holiday advantage needs to come in handy.
