The 2012 adaptation of Agneepath, which originally was picturized on Amitabh Bachchan in 1990, marked its return in theatres with Hrithik Roshan taking over the role of Vijay Deenanath Chauhan along with an ensemble cast of Priyanka Chopra, the late Rishi Kapoor, and Sanjay Dutt in key roles. However, it seems that before locking the cast, Dharma was auditioning for the cast of negative roles and Abhishek Banerjee was brought on board as one of the villains.
Abhishek Banerjee reveals losing out on Karan Johar’s remake of Agneepath; says, “Dharma ke dawaze humare liye humesha ke liye band ho gaye the”
Readers would be aware that Abhishek Banerjee is currently riding high on the praises coming his way for the role of Janaa in the Maddock Supernatural Universe film Stree 2. As Banerjee continues to taste success in his recent ventures including another release Vedaa, the actor opened up about his struggling days and recalled the time he lost out on the successful film Agneepath.
Talking about the same to Free Press Journal, Abhishek said, “Dharma ke dawaze humare liye humesha ke liye band ho gaye the (The doors for Dharma had shut forever). Hua ye tha Hrithik wali Agneepath mai nikal diya tha unhone (It so happened that they had removed me from the Hrithik starrer Agneepath). There was a reason for it, Karan sir was there, and we were kids at that time, 32-33 years old. Piyush Mishra recommended our name to Karan Johar.”
Revealing further details on what happened, Abhishek continued, “It was a Dharma film, before that I did The Dirty Picture. It was a big film, and I was on cloud nine when I got a Dharma film. The casting began and we were at that time, Anurag Kashyap type Gangs of Wasseypur’s characters. They wanted to cast villains in Agneepath, and we were there but it did not suit them. Karan Johar ko laga inko thodi khada karunga mein Hrithik ke samne (how can we make them stand against someone like Hrithik Roshan). They wanted some kind of presence.”
For the unversed, Agneepath marked the directorial debut of Karan Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar under his banner Dharma Productions. The film received widespread love from audience not only for its massy appeal but also for its chartbuster album.
