A week after Centre County was battered by heavy rains from Tropical Cyclone Debby, the county is again under a flood watch issued by the National Weather Service.
A portion of central Pennsylvania — including Centre County and six other counties — is under a flood watch from noon Saturday until 2 a.m. Sunday. According to the NWS, slow-moving thunderstorms could result in excessive runoff that might lead to the flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other flood-prone locations.
In some areas, where Debby’s impact was greatest, it could take less than an inch of rain in one hour to make flash flooding, the NWS reported.
The weather advisory was issued just before 5 a.m. Saturday.
A flood watch is less severe than a flood warning, which is issued when flooding is imminent or occurring. A flood watch means conditions are favorable for flooding — or, in other words, flooding is possible but not imminent.
Last week, Centre County was under both a flood watch and flood warning. On Saturday morning, the county was simply under a flood watch.
On Friday, the NWS forecast that State College would receive 2.14 inches of rainfall in a 72-hour period, through 8 a.m. Monday.
