Flash flood, thunderstorm, tornado warnings issued in PA – MASHAHER


EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — The National Weather Service (NWS) announced Sunday multiple counties are under multiple weather warnings.

Shortly before 2:30 p.m., the NWS announced a flash flood warning was in place for the following counties.

  • Lackawanna County

  • Susquehanna County

  • Wayne County

The warning will be in place until 5:30 p.m. and the NWS says the following areas are anticipated to be impacted.

  • Carbondale

  • Archbald

  • Forest City

  • Mayfield

  • Waymart

  • Union Dale

  • Starrucca

  • Pleasant Mount

  • Shehawken

  • Starruca, Starlight

  • Hiawatha

  • Tompkinsville

  • Equinunk

  • Sherman

  • Mount Cobb

  • Blakely

  • Jessup

  • Clifford

  • Jermyn

The NWS warns residents to take proper precautions when encountering an area experiencing flash flooding by turning around and to not drown.

Areas anticipated to be impacted could experience flash flooding of urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, small creeks, and streams, as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas.

Along with flash flooding, the NWS also issued a tornado warning shortly before 4:00 p.m. for Wayne County that lasts until 4:30 p.m.

At 3:53 p.m., the NWS says a severe thunderstorm capable of making a tornado was found by radar over Forest City moving northeast at 15 miles per hour.

Flying debris can be dangerous to those without shelter and mobile homes could be damaged or destroyed, according to the NWS.

The NWS says damage to windows, roofs, and windows along with trees are also anticipated.

If you are in the area anticipated to be impacted, the NWS urges residents to move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building and to avoid windows.

If you are outdoors, in a mobile home or vehicle, the NWS says to move to the nearest shelter and protect yourself from flying debris.

In addition to a flash flood and tornado warning, the NWS announced a severe thunderstorm warning will be in effect until 10:00 p.m. Sunday night.

Severe thunderstorms are anticipated to impact the following counties.

  • Columbia County

  • Montour County

  • Northumberland County

  • Schuylkill County
