The San Jose Sharks made a significant trade with the Edmonton Oilers last night as they acquired Cody Ceci and a 2025 third-round pick.

From the Oilers’ perspective, it makes perfect sense. Edmonton is in the middle of offer sheet drama with the St. Louis Blues. The Oilers have one more day to match the Blues’ offers to Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg.
Broberg’s cap hit would be $4.58 million, and Holloway’s is $2.29 million. The Oilers shed $3.25 million in cap space by sending Ceci to the Sharks and added $950K from acquiring Emberson.
They also added Vasily Podkozin from the Vancouver Canucks, who has a $1 million AAV.
By saving $2.3 million in cap space, the Oilers now have options to match the Borberg and Holloway Offersheets.
Former Sharks forward Evander Kane will reportedly start the season on LTIR, which would give the Oilers $5.125 million more in cap space. With those two moves done, the Oilers can become cap-compliant.

If both players are matched, and Kane returns during the regular season, then Edmonton must make another trade to shed more salary. PuckPedia posted a quick recap of all the situations that may happen.
To recap:
-EDM can match both offer sheets
-if they match both & Kane returns with everyone healthy, can only be compliant with another trade
-If match Broberg but not Holloway, can be cap compliant when Kane returns without needing another trade https://t.co/UMuUxmU68R— PuckPedia (@PuckPedia) August 19, 2024
Cody Ceci brings the San Jose Sharks some veteran leadership and playoff experience that the young roster needs. This move also could free up more potential for Shakir Mukhamadullin to make the opening night roster.
Trading the 24-year-old Ty Emberson may initially sting, but the Sharks added more draft capital, which is still prominent as Mike Grier continues to build his vision through the draft.
