August 12, 2024 will go down in history as the date on which Mahesh Bhatt, one of Hindi cinema’s most prolific and iconic directors, decided to return to cinema—as a writer.
Anu Malik on working with Mahesh Bhatt after ages, “Bhatt-saab called me when I went through a bad phase in early 1990s for Sir and Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee”
He is now writing Tu Meri Poori Kahani, directed by the young Suhrita Das, and featuring two young stars. The music will be scored by Anu Malik, who is back with Mahesh Bhatt again in an association of over a dozen films that began almost a quarter of a century ago!
When asked at the film’s launch event why he chose Anu for this film in these “unmusical” times of multiple composers and an overdose of unoriginal “re-creations” and when Anu himself had little work, the veteran replied, “My film is a love story and that is precisely why I wanted Anu Malik. I wanted the kind of music we have all been missing for a very long time. People still remember the melodies we have heard in the 1990s, like his Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee. I could only think of Anu for this film. We have almost finalized six songs.”
Anupam Kher, with whom Anu has also worked in the former’s directorial debut, Om Jai Jagadish, in 2002, stated, “I would like to add something. The fact that Anu is not busy today barely matters. Ek heera hamesha hi heera rehta hai! Usski chamak kam nahin hoti (A diamond will always remain a diamond. Its glitter will never reduce)!”
Anu Malik entered the venue almost an hour later, and when I asked for his reaction to these statements, he said, “I am overwhelmed by what they have said. I am going to work very hard! Bhatt-saab had called me when I was going through a bad phase in the early 1990s for Sir and Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee. But those times were different. For him to call me at this point of time was magical, and when he has now said that people are waiting to hear my kind of music, I repeat—I am overwhelmed!”
The composer emotionally added, “I must add that I need to also thank Vikram Bhatt, one of the film’s producers, who told Bhatt-saab that he would like only me to do this film, and Bhatt-saab too fully agreed that he wanted Anu Malik! I am thankful for the blessings of Lord Ganesh and Saraswati Maa for this renewed association. There is a new director in Suhrita along with me on board, and Bhatt-saab is on fire!”
Anu Malik first worked with Mahesh Bhatt in Awargee and Prem Dharam (1990), both films produced by P. Raghunathan, Hema Malini’s cousin and actress Madhoo’s father. The former film even had a song rendered by Ghulam Ali, ‘Chamakte chand ko toota hua tara banaa daala’. But it was in 1993 that Anu staged a spectacular comeback with Bhatt’s Sir and Phir Teri Kahani Yaad Aayee. They later collaborated on over 12 Bhatt’s home productions as well as outside directorials that included milestone musicals like Naajayaz, Tamanna, Duplicate, Saaya, Murder, Zeher and Kalyug. Their last work together was in Begum Jaan (2017).
