WAUSAU − A 43-year-old man is scheduled to make an initial appearance Tuesday afternoon on charges stemming from a Sunday evening fight that killed a man in the downtown area.
Thomas L. Schroeder, of Wausau, is charged with felony murder caused by battery in the death of Chad Lattimer, 53, of Wausau. Schroeder also is charged with obstructing an officer and misdemeanor bail jumping.
At 6:20 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a call in the 400 block of Washington Street after a 911 caller reported a fight between two men, according to a news release from the Wausau Police Department. One man hit another, causing the victim to fall into the road. When officers arrived on scene, they found the unconscious victim lying on his back with a head injury, the release said.
Emergency medical services transported the man to a local hospital in critical condition, according to the news release. Schroeder left the scene, according to the release.
At 6:32 p.m. Sunday, an officer found Schroeder in the 300 block of North Fourth Street, walking back toward the crime scene, according to the release. After a brief struggle, police took Schroeder into custody.
On Monday evening, the victim died from his injuries, according to the release.
