The documentary Angry Young Men was released on Amazon Prime Video today, that is, August 20, and it educates viewers about some fascinating trivia. The first episode throws light on Salim Khan’s acting career before he joined hands with Javed Akhtar and emerged as the most successful writer Jodi of Indian cinema. Farah Khan, in this episode, revealed that Salim Khan worked with her mother in her debut film. The manner, in which Farah narrated the episode, in her trademark humorous style, brought the house down.
Angry Young Men: Farah Khan reveals that her mother Menaka Irani debuted as an actor opposite Salim Khan: “My nani used to take a cane and hit Salim uncle, if he did not act well”
Farah Khan began by saying, “Salim uncle and my mother Menaka Irani, at that time, unfortunately, had done a movie together, where she was being launched as a heroine. This skinny Parsi girl and Salim uncle, who my grandmother called ‘Mahim ka gunda‘, were launched together in a film called Bachpan (1963).”
Bachpan was produced by Farah Khan’s maternal grandmother, P N Irani. Farah added, “My nani was a very ferocious old lady, who was the producer of Bachpan. She used to take a cane and hit Salim uncle, if he did not act well! Of course, that movie ran all of one show, I think.”
Salim Khan, too, made fun of the film and the casting, “Farah’s mother was the heroine and I was the hero. The film was doomed from the first shot (laughs)!”
Helen explained why Salim Khan’s acting career never took off, “Everything in those days was overly done. Instead of saying ‘Nahin’, one had to say ‘Nahiiiiin‘! He (Salim Khan) couldn’t do that and hence, he was known as a bad actor. But if you see one or two of his films, he was good.”
Explaining how he got launched as an actor, Salim Khan narrated, “My career took off at a wedding in Indore. Tarachand Barjatya’s son was getting married. Many producers had come from Bombay. I frequented a hotel where they were all staying. There was a producer, K Amarnath, who had made many films. He saw me and asked someone, ‘Yeh ladka kaun hai?’. He then asked me, ‘Filmon mein kaam karoge?’ I replied, ‘Kabhi kiya nahin hai’. He answered, ‘Woh toh Dilip Kumar ne bhi nahin kiya tha. There’s always a first time (laughs)’.”
He continued, “Then I came to Bombay for my screen test. K Amarnath was producing Baraat (1960). He cast me in the role of Ajit’s younger brother.”
