Prime Video has unveiled the trailer for its original series Call Me Bae, promising viewers a captivating blend of laughter, drama, and emotion. The eight-part series, which marks the streaming debut of Bollywood star Ananya Panday, follows the journey of Bella Chowdhary, affectionately known as Bae, as she transitions from an heiress to a determined hustler navigating the bustling streets of Mumbai.
Call Me Bae: Ananya Panday reacts to giving nod to her past ‘struggle’ remark in the trailer: “I’m done with that”
The trailer introduces viewers to Bae’s opulent life in New Delhi, filled with luxury and privilege. However, this glamorous existence is abruptly disrupted when Bae is disowned by her family, forcing her to leave behind her lavish lifestyle. The scene quickly shifts to Mumbai, where Bae must adapt to a completely different reality—one that involves public transport, cramped living spaces, and the everyday challenges of life in India’s most populous city.
As Bae attempts to navigate her new world, the trailer showcases her struggles and triumphs, all while maintaining her trademark wit and humour. The upbeat music and vibrant visuals highlight Bae’s journey from a pampered socialite to a resourceful hustler, who learns to make the most of her circumstances. Along the way, she forms unexpected friendships and alliances, adding depth and heart to the story.
The trailer even includes a self-referential nod to a famous line from a past interview where Ananya spoke about her struggles in the industry. In the series, this moment is humorously revisited, offering a meta-commentary on her career. The trailer’s final scene, featuring a witty exchange between Bae and a watchman, is directly inspired by a memorable conversation Ananya had with her Gehraiyaan co-star Siddhant Chaturvedi about the notion of struggle.
Reflecting on the trailer’s playful take on her past comments at the press conference, Ananya shared, “We have made fun of that line ourselves, we have kind of owned up to it. I said it so long back, like five years ago. I really struggle with answering this question now.” She continued, “Honestly, I am done with that. I am just trying to keep my head down and work, and I hope people like my work. There’s no struggle—I am doing fine only.”
Directed by Collin D’Cunha and created by Ishita Moitra, Call Me Bae is a light-hearted comedy-drama set against the contrasting backdrops of Delhi’s high society and Mumbai’s fast-paced life. The series is produced by Dharmatic Entertainment, with Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra serving as executive producers. The show’s ensemble cast includes Vir Das, Gurfateh Pirzada, Varun Sood, Vihaan Samat, Muskkaan Jaferi, Niharika Lyra Dutt, Lisa Mishra, and Mini Mathur in pivotal roles.
The series is set to premiere on Prime Video on September 6, 2024, in Hindi, with dubs available in Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and Kannada.
