VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — It was a life cut short in a deadly DUI crash in Virginia Beach as loved ones remember Benjamin Alvarado Jr. after he died in the early hours Sunday on Shore Drive.

Those who knew Alvarado best say he would help anyone, which is exactly what he was doing when his life sadly came to an end. He was a beloved father, friend and veteran.

“He always was very lighthearted and wanted to have a good time and just was the life of the party,” said Chrystal Ueltschi. “Anybody would say he would walk in a room and it’s like, OK, the party has begun.”

That’s how Ueltschi is remembering Alverado. The two dated and were longtime friends. She said when she heard what happened, she felt all the emotions.

The two-vehicle crash happened around 2:30 a.m. Sunday on Shore Drive near First Landing State Park. Police say Alvarado, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene. A female passenger was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

It was a tragic end for Alvarado, who loved ones say he was focused on bettering himself and his community.

“He put it on Facebook — ‘you know I’m sober. If you need help with anything, call me anytime, I’ll come get you. I’ll drive you home. Don’t drive drunk,’” she said. “It’s very ironic what happened.”

It’s ironic because police arrested 22-year-old Samuel Randolph, the driver of the other vehicle, and charged him with driving under the influence. Police said it is his first offense.

Alvarado had led several of his friends to sobriety, and even started a nonprofit to help those battling with cancer. His friends said he had a servant’s heart.

They now seek justice.

Alvarado would’ve celebrated 73 days sober Sunday. Police said the incident is still under investigation, and additional charges are anticipated.
