Gunfire damages Muscogee school bus while transporting students, Columbus police say – MASHAHER

A Muscogee County School District bus transporting students was among three vehicles struck by gunfire during a shooting Friday afternoon in Columbus, according to police.

Seven children were on the bus that was damaged by the gunfire around 2:45 p.m. near the intersection of Cusseta Road and 23rd Avenue, but no injuries were reported for any of the occupants in the vehicles, Brittany Santiago, Columbus Police Department public information officer, said in an email Monday.

No arrests have been made in the case, Santiago said.

“This incident occurred in broad daylight as children were being dismissed from school and on their way home,” said Santiago, who referred questions about the students’ ages or grade levels and their school to MCSD. “Their bus was struck by gunfire due to the reckless actions of others. This could have ended in tragedy, and we urge anyone who witnessed the incident or has information to come forward. Please contact authorities immediately by calling 911 or 706-653-3300.”

MCSD communications director Kimberly Wright didn’t answer the Ledger-Enquirer’s questions before publication.
