St. Louis Blues add Philip Broberg, Dylan Holloway after Edmonton Oilers decline to match offer sheets – MASHAHER


ST. LOUIS — The Edmonton Oilers waited until the final moments before deciding the fate of offer sheets tendered by the St. Louis Blues for restricted free agents, defenseman Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway.

And in the end, both players are now headed to the Central Division.

The Oilers decided not to match ad allowed both players to join the Blues after the team tendered offer sheets on Aug. 13 and accept compensation of second- and third-round picks in 2025.

Broberg, 23, will join the Blues on a two-year, $9.16 million contract ($4,550,917 average annual value) and Holloway, who turns 23 next month, joins on a two-year $4.58 million contract ($2.29 AAV).

In a separate move, the Blues are also sending its 2028 third-round draft pick and unsigned 2023 fifth-round draft pick, defenseman Paul Fischer, to Edmonton for future considerations.

The Oilers made two trades Sunday, acquiring defenseman Ty Emberson from the San Jose Sharks and were able to shed veteran defenseman Cody Ceci and his $3.25 million average annual value after picking up forward Vasily Podkolzin from the Vancouver Canucks and obviously feel those two young players are replacements for the players departing.

Edmonton had the means, along with putting forward Evander Kane on long-term injured-reserve to fit the aforementioned players under the cap for the time being but would have had to allocate for Kane’s $5.1-plus million cap hit when he is activated.

These are the first offer sheets presented in the NHL since 2021 when the Montreal Canadiens elected not to match on forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi.

Broberg (6-foot-4, 212 pounds) was originally drafted by the Oilers in the first round as the eighth overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft.

Last season, the lefty defenseman played in 12 regular-season games for the Oilers and 49 regular-season games for Bakersfield of the American Hockey League, totaling 40 points (five goals, 35 assists) overall; he had three points (two goals, one assist) in 10 Stalney Cup Playoff games with the Oilers

Broberg has played in 81 NHL regular-season games and has 13 points (two goals, 11 assists)

Holloway (6-1, 206 pounds) was originally drafted by the Oilers with the 14th overall pick in 2020.

Last season, the forward 38 regular-season games for the Oilers and 18 regular-season games for Bakersfield and had 25 points (16 goals, nine assists); he also played in all 25 postseason games for the Oilers with seven points (five goals, two assists).
