Stree 2 is a blockbuster and there are many reasons that have contributed to its success. One of the factors is the rocking cameo by Varun Dhawan aka Bhediya. His entry was greeted with claps and whistles in theatres across the country. However, when Bhediya (2022) was released in cinemas, it underperformed in cinemas despite a positive word of mouth.

Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke with Stree 2’s director Amar Kaushik, who also directed Bhediya. When asked if the Varun Dhawan-starrer was affected by the Drishyam 2 (2022) wave, he replied, “Yes. Our film didn’t get the numbers we wanted. It’s not like our film had disaster figures. However, we did wonder that ‘Jo number humne socha tha, woh kyun nahin aaya’ especially when everyone liked it.”
He continued, “However, Drishyam 2 had become a very big film and no one imagined it. That could be the reason. When a film becomes so humongous and a talking point, the other films do get affected. The tickets are also expensive and viewers can’t afford to see more than one film.”
Amar Kaushik then stated, “Many later saw Bhediyaon OTT platforms. Hence, when he comes in Stree 2, everyone knows who is he and reacts accordingly. It proves that they have seen it and loved it. Very initially, some people had reservations about Bhediya’s appearance in Stree 2. But I reasoned that ‘We have made this universe. Bhediya has to be there’.”
At the trailer launch of Stree 2, producer Dinesh Vijan revealed that the next film in the Horror Comedy Cinematic Universe is Thama. When asked if Amar Kaushik will next Bhediya 2 or Stree 3 next, he explained, “Everything will depend on the script. The writing of both Bhediya 2 and Stree 3 is going on simultaneously. We’ll also have to ascertain that the narrative occurs in chronological order. But even if it does not, hum timeline upar neeche kar lenge. As of now, it’s too premature (to answer this question).”
After Stree (2018), Amar Kaushik directed a film outside this universe – Bala (2019) – and it was also loved. Can we expect him to make another such non-horror comedy film? He replied, “I would love to but this universe has become very big. Hence, I believe that I should get involved in all the films as a producer, if not as a director. Yeh sab cheezein bahut dil se aati hai. I can’t direct every film. There are so many stories, which are not a part of the universe, that I want to make films on. If I get time, I’ll direct or else, I’ll produce them. In fact, I produce only those films which I feel I should have directed!”
