Former Trussville doctor who tried to meet 17-year-old patient for sex sentenced to 3 years behind bars – MASHAHER

BLOUNT COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) — A former doctor in Trussville could be removed from the U.S. after pleading guilty to trying to meet a 17-year-old patient for sex two years ago.

On Friday, Janaki Earla pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of obscene material depicting a child under the age of 17, as well as one count of first-degree human trafficking. Earla, 60, was an internist at Wellness Medical Center in Trussville, but his medical license has since been suspended by the Alabama Medical Licensure Commission.

Earla was arrested on October 11, 2022, at the Days Inn motel in Oneonta, where he was to meet a 17-year-old patient for sex. The victim, however, had reported Earla’s intentions to police, who created a sting operation at the motel to catch him. Earla, who told the victim that he wanted to be her “sugar daddy,” allegedly was carrying alcohol and condoms with him.

As part of his plea agreement, Earla was sentenced to 15 years in prison. He will only spend three years behind bars and remain on supervised probation for three years, however. If he violates the terms of his probation, Earla would be forced to go back to prison to serve the remainder of his sentence.

Assistant District Attorney Scott Gilliland said Earla’s immigration lawyer said that once he completes his prison sentence, he would be expected to be removed from the country and return to his home country of India.
