The final night of the Democratic National Convention is here and will culminate with Kamala Harris formally accepting her party’s nomination to be president, in what will be one of the most important speeches of her political life.
Less than five weeks after Joe Biden withdrew from the race, Harris will have the chance to explain to a massive prime time audience who she is, what kind of president she will be, and hopefully flesh out parts of her policy agenda, which has so far been big on vibes but short on substance.
The 59-year-old will also lay out the stakes of the election against Donald Trump, depicting him as a divisive figure of the past, while casting herself as “a new way forward”.
In addition to Harris, pop star Pink is set to perform, country trio The Chicks will sing the American national anthem, and yes – those Beyoncé rumours are still swirling. (Oprah made a surprise appearance, so why not Queen B?).
Speakers for the fourth and final night include Republican congressman Adam Kinzinger, Michigan Governor Gretchen “Big Gretch” Whitmer, Reverend Al Sharpton, and Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren. I’ve spent part of the afternoon watching rehearsals, and it looks like it’s going to be one hell of a party.
