Prime Video dropped a roundtable conversation with The legendary writer duo Salim-Javed, filled with lighthearted banter and heartwarming anecdotes. the legendary screenwriting duo Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar shared some intriguing insights into making Sholay, one of the most iconic films in Indian cinema.

Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar’s Interest in Gabbar Singh’s Role

Among the various behind-the-scenes stories revealed during the discussion, one of the most surprising was that both Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar were eager to play the role of the notorious bandit Gabbar Singh in Sholay. Salim Khan recounted, “Film ki jitni star cast thi, everybody wanted to play Gabbar’s role. Amitabh Bachchan too wanted to play the role of Gabbar. Sanjeev Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan both came to me and asked. Dharam Ji never asked for Gabbar’s role. He was very happy with his role.”

However, Amitabh’s dream of playing a dacoit on-screen came true with Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag. For the unversed, the film was an adaptation of Sholay, and Amitabh’s character’s name was Babban Singh. 

The Origins of Gabbar Singh and Sholay

Sholay remains a landmark in Indian cinema, and the documentary sheds light on its development, including how the character of Gabbar Singh came to be. In one of the episodes of Angry Young Men, Javed Akhtar explained that the original storyline, conceived by Salim Khan, featured two main characters who were former army recruits. However, producer G. P. Sippy advised against depicting them as soldiers, citing potential limitations in creative liberties.

Salim Khan also shared the inspiration behind the character of Gabbar Singh, revealing that the name and concept were derived from real-life stories of a feared dacoit who terrorized people by killing and mutilating his victims. “My father was a high-ranking police officer. We heard stories of a dacoit named Gabbar Singh. He used to kill people and chop off their noses too,” Khan recalled.

The documentary, released on Amazon Prime Video on August 20, delves into the glorious career of Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, collectively known as Salim-Javed, and their profound impact on Indian cinema.
