With the exception of Stree 2, Hindi films have struggled at the box office for months this year. While 2024 has been challenging for most Indian film industries, there’s a growing perception in Hindi-speaking regions that regional cinema is outpacing Bollywood in producing successful films. When asked about this in a recent interview, Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba actress Taapsee Pannu remarked that the ratio of hits to flops is fairly consistent across all film industries.

In an interview with ANI, when asked why southern film industries seem to be doing better than Hindi film industries, Taapsee explained that audiences in Hindi-speaking states are primarily exposed to successful southern films and are often unaware of those that leave theatres within the first week. “There also films fail, there also films don’t work after 3-4 days, and they are out of the theatre. It’s just that you don’t get to know about it sitting here. If you are staying in that state or if you follow every release of that industry, you will realise that they also have equal proportion of hits and flops. It’s not that different,” she said.

Taapsee then noted that the movie-viewing culture in the south differs significantly as compared to Hindi and said that in south, “movie viewing is almost like a religious activity. People are movie lovers. It’s a ritual there.”  She said, “It is relatively difficult to pull out a Hindi movie viewing audience from their houses to go and watch the film.”

Talking about the south film business, Taapsee was asked about the basic differences in work culture between the two industries. When questioned if the southern film business is more organised and disciplined, Taapsee responded that this is not always the case. She said, “Having worked in both the industries, I can tell you it’s not the case.” She stated that when she first started working in the South, before her Hindi film debut, she was never given bound scripts. Instead, she received daily dialogue sheets, unlike in Bollywood films.

She further said, “Till the time I was there in the southern film industry, I didn’t get any bound scripts for any of my films. I used to only get scenes, and a lot of things used to change on set. I think now, probably, it’s better there as well. But when I started in Hindi, my first film Chashme Baddoor, even though it was a David Dhawan film who is known as the director from the time when everything was written on the spot, even that film had a bound script.”

She noted that even Anurag Kashyap, who frequently changes things on set, provided her with a proper screenplay.

On the work front, Taapsee recently appeared in Phir Aayi Hasseen Dillruba and Khel Khel Mein.
