Nearly five years after a then-Gahanna Lincoln High School senior slammed into another vehicle at 116 mph, resulting in the deaths of three people, including one of his football teammates, the case is headed to trial.
Kobie Stillwell, now 23, is facing three counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of aggravated vehicular assault. His trial begins Monday with jury selection before Franklin County Common Pleas Court Judge Andria Noble.
All of the charges also carry firearm specifications.
On Oct. 12, 2019, Stillwell was driving an Audi A6 that struck a Toyota Camry at the intersection of Morse and Sunbury roads. The fiery crash ended with two people dead at the scene, Kumari Biswakarma, 40, who had been driving the Toyota, and one of her daughters, 24-year-old Anju Biswakarma.
Another daughter, who was 22 at the time, was hospitalized with severe injuries.
Stillwell, then 18, had two classmates and football teammates in the car with him. One of them, 17-year-old JaShawn Scott, who was a junior wide receiver, died from his injuries.
The other passenger, who was also 17 at the time, and Stillwell both suffered injuries.
Columbus police found a loaded AK-47 rifle in the car after the crash, which resulted in the firearm specifications added to Stillwell’s charges.
A crash reconstruction found Stillwell was going an estimated 116 mph at the time of the crash. He was indicted in 2020, however, the trial has been delayed multiple times.
At the time of the crash, Stillwell was the number one ranked punter in football recruiting in Ohio. He is the son of former Ohio State University linebacker Obie Stillwell, who played for the Buckeyes between 1992 and 1995.
Since being indicted, Stillwell played football at Tennessee State University, according to the university’s website.
