Three months after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, Red Lobster is set to close 23 additional locations nationwide. These closures bring the total number of shut-down restaurants to at least 129 across the U.S.
The new closures include three locations each in Florida, Illinois, and Virginia; two in Minnesota and New York; and one each in Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, and South Carolina. The company will reject the leases for these 23 locations by Saturday, August 31, as detailed in a 23-page court document filed on August 22 with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Florida.
Background on Red Lobster’s bankruptcy
Red Lobster, which filed for bankruptcy on May 19, has been struggling with significant debt, frequent CEO changes, a controversial all-you-can-eat shrimp promotion, and a 30% decline in customer visits since 2019. The bankruptcy filing follows the closure of dozens of locations and an ongoing effort to streamline operations.
