Seven South Mississippi restaurants failed their kitchen inspections last week, two after the health department received complaints about conditions.
Those cited between Aug. 16 and 23 are:
Alpha 24 service station at 6318 Mississippi 613, Moss Point, was inspected Aug. 19 following a complaint.
It was cited for:
▪ Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible
▪ Food not separated and protected
Corrected during the inspection was:
▪ Food in good condition, safe and unadulterated
The only other inspection in May resulted in an A.
Subway, 2316 Market St., Pascagoula, was inspected Aug. 21 following a complaint.
It was cited for:
▪ No certified manager
▪ No person in charge present who demonstrates knowledge and performs duty
Corrected during the inspection was:
▪ Proper hot holding temperatures
This was the third C dating back to 2011. The most recent C was in 2017.
Mississippi Health Department requires restaurants and kitchens to have the owner or manager take a course in food safety procedures.
Coco Loco Mexican restaurant at 6900 Mississippi 613, Moss Point, was inspected Aug. 19 for a permit renewal.
It was cited for:
▪ No certified manager
▪ Improper cooling time and temperatures
This was the first C dating back to 2013.
Subway, 3100 Bienville Blvd., Ocean Springs, was inspected Aug. 22 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:
▪ No certified manager, a repeat offense
The is the first C dating back to 2012.
Wayne Lee’s grocery store, 12109 Mississippi 63, Lucedale, had a scheduled inspection Aug. 20. It was cited for:
▪ Improper date marking and disposition, a repeat violation
Corrected during the inspection were:
▪ Proper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use
▪ Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized
▪ Time as public health control procedures, records
This is the fifth C since 2009. The most recent was in July 2023.
Sonic of 17th Street, 2505 17th St., Gulfport, had a scheduled inspection Aug. 23. It was cited for:
▪ Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible.
This is the first C dating back to 2018.
New York Pizza, 1449 U.S. 90, Gautier, was inspected Aug. 22 for a permit renewal. It was cited for:
▪ Improper cold holding temperatures.
This was the first C dating back to 2022.
Restaurants and kitchens in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if all violations are corrected during the inspection and “C” if the violations are critical.
The health inspection grade must be displayed in all restaurants, in kitchens such as school cafeterias, day care centers, and cafes and bars where food is sold.
From Aug. 1-22, the inspectors have given 209 kitchens in South Mississippi scored a A with no violations, 36 a B and 11 a C.
