One student was stabbed Monday afternoon during an altercation at Palm Bay High School, with the school temporarily placed on lockdown, Melbourne Police said.
The incident took place between two male students at about 1 p.m. at the campus, located at the intersection of Babcock Street and Pirate Lane, according to police and Brevard Public Schools officials.
One student received a stab wound to the abdomen, and the other, a cut on the hand, police said. The two were transported to separate hospitals and are in stable condition. One student nvolved in the incident was in police custody Monday afternoon, BPS officials said.
“The incident is isolated and there is no threat to the community at large,”, Melbourne Police said in a statement.
A heavy police presence was reported throughout the afternoon at the campus, where a shelter in place order followed the lockdown, according to BPS officials.
As of 2:23 p.m., there was “no ongoing threat,” BPS officials said.
“We will dismiss students according to normal protocol,” said Janet Murnaghan, a spokesperson for the district. “If you decide to pick your student up early, expect delays.”
