One of the coolest films to have come out of Bollywood, Dhoom (2004), completed 20 years on August 27. Esha Deol starred in an interesting role of Sheena who seems to be an innocent happy-go-lucky girl but is later revealed to be a thief. Bollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to the actress in her palatial residence about Dhoom and a lot more. She looked ravishing and we felt that we were transported back in time to 2004.
20 Years of Dhoom EXCLUSIVE: Esha Deol reveals how her life changed after its release: “I was called ‘Dilbara’ and the ‘Dhoom girl’. A lot of people had a crush on me”; also notes “We don’t know whether John Abraham’s character is dead or not”
What’s the first thing that comes to your mind when I say Dhoom and 20 years?
Adrenaline rush! This is because of two reasons – firstly due to the way the film is and secondly, because 20 years have passed in a jiffy (smiles).
How did you bag the film? Was there an audition?
It was more of a look test but I was given time to get into that kind of a mould. I worked out a lot. It was six months of training that I had to undergo. But I ate well and healthily; I didn’t starve. In short, it all was all about getting into the lean, mean look. The experience was fun.
You have often said in interviews that you were a tomboy. Did you have any doubts in your mind if you’d be able to pull off a sexy character like this?
No. I was a tomboy by heart. Also, which girl won’t enjoy looking glamorous and having all that jazz (smiles)? Hence, I knew that I’d pull it off well. Moreover, I knew there was a lot of me which was in Sheena. So, it was very comfortable for me to be in that character.
It is a famous anecdote that you had to get your mother’s (Hema Malini) permission to wear a bikini in Dhoom. Did you get permission from your father (Dharmendra) as well?
No. Getting permission from my mom was as good as (getting permission from my father).
You had maximum scenes with Uday Chopra. How was it working with him?
It was a lot of fun. He’s a sweetheart and was so much in character. He was perfect for the part of Ali. We shot the song ‘Dilbara’, in BKC (Bandra Kurla Complex). It was not ready yet. It didn’t look like how it looks now. It had an empty stretch of land. We shot there for a couple of nights with artificial rain. It made for a nice experience.
How is it shooting in the rain?
We have done it in a lot of films. We are in this profession and you have to do what you are meant to do. You’ve signed up for it and you better do it (laughs).
John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan were rising stars. Please tell us your experience of working with them
Both the boys were very respectful and sincere towards what we were doing. Hence, we were all very focused. At the same time, we also indulged in a lot of fun and masti.
Dhoom was a rare action entertainer made by Yash Raj Films (YRF) at that time…
Yes. Yash ji (Yash Chopra) and Adi (Aditya Chopra) both were quite involved in the film. It was amazing to get to work with Yash Raj Films. They all knew that they were trying something new. ‘Let’s give it our best’ was the attitude.
Do you recall where were you on the day of release?
I was not here. In fact, Abhishek and I both were shooting in Calgary, Canada for Dus (2005). When we learned that people were loving the film, we were like ‘Now we can go back to Mumbai safely’ (laughs)!
I remember some reviews were not encouraging…
Sorry to say but who reads reviews ya! The movie did well. Period.
How did the audience react to you after the release of Dhoom?
The way people looked at me and the love that I received was overwhelming. I was called ‘Dilbara’ and the ‘Dhoom girl’. A lot of them had crushes on me! It was sweet and lovely.
Have your daughters Radhya and Miraya seen Dhoom?
Yes, they have. They love it and they even dance to ‘Dilbara’ and ‘Dhoom Macha Le’.
How did you feel that the makers didn’t get your character back in Dhoom 2 (2006) and Dhoom 3 (2013)?
I guess they never repeated the negative characters I think. Even John didn’t get repeated
But his character dies…
You never know whether he died or not!
True. Same with Hrithik Roshan and Aamir Khan…
Exactly. So, there’s always that door open (smiles).
If you were offered Dhoom 4, would you do it?
Of course yes. Why not?
