Dhoom (2004) completed 20 years today on August 27. The film is remembered not just for its music, performances and humour but also for its sleek action. It brought a new style of action to the industry and the credit for it goes to action director Allan Amin. In an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungama, he spoke about how he conceptualized the film’s fight and chase scenes.
20 Years of Dhoom EXCLUSIVE: “The action was all REAL; we made John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan fight on top of the trailer; even today, it looks better than the action in recent films” – Allan Amin
When asked what was the brief given to him, Allan Amin revealed, “The brief was simple. Director Sanjay Gadhavi was clear that he wanted major action sequences. I told him that the way I am looking at it, it should be done with bikes. This is because I am a biker. Hence, for me, doing action with bikes was very easy and also we wanted to come up with sequences not been shot before. It was also all real. Hence, even today, the action in Dhoom looks so good. Otherwise, the films nowadays use too much of special effects and blue screen. It looks very fake.”
Talking about the film’s nail-biting climax, he said, “At that time, we made John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan fight on top of the trailer. Of course, there were safety cables. But even today, it looks better than the action in recent films.”
John Abraham’s entry scene shows him throwing a helmet at the tyre of a police jeep. The vehicle overturns. The writer remarked that he was not sure if that was possible but nevertheless, it made for a fun watch.
Allan Amin explained, “It was a little exaggerated but it is possible. The helmet is very strong. So, if it hits the right spot, it can turn over the vehicle.”
Coming back to the film’s climax, it showed a boat being attached to the trailer and zooming on the road. Allan Amin added, “The boat even jumps over the trailer. I actually called a guy from Australia who specializes in boat jump. He flew down, made a ramp and got the boat jump in front of the truck in Goa as per our requirement.”
Despite such breathtaking action scenes, Allan Amin didn’t win the Filmfare Award for Best Action. The award was given to Vikram Dharma of Yuva (2004). Allan Amin made it clear that this didn’t matter to him. Interestingly, he got the award a year later for Dus (2005).
