Anthony Albanese has doubled down on his Treasurer’s attacks on Peter Dutton, accusing the Opposition Leader of never having a positive or constructive answer.
The Prime Minister said Mr Dutton had to produce some costed policies and unveil his plans for budget cuts to present a credible alternative to voters.
His comments came after Jim Chalmers labelled the opposition leader the most divisive figure in modern Australian politics.
“We see him constantly looking to divide Australians rather than bring them together,” Mr Albanese said.
“Peter Dutton just constantly is looking for the negative — and you can’t run an economy, you can’t actually take Australia forward by just being someone who’s opposed to everything and is constantly negative and relying upon fear campaigns.”
Deputy Liberal leader Sussan Ley returned the personal attacks, saying Dr Chalmers was merely “trying to talk tough” to his colleagues.
“He’s got a PhD in politics, not economics, and that’s on full display today,” she said.
“It’s ridiculous to suggest what he’s doing in the face of the evidence … because Peter Dutton has got the big calls right.”
More to come.
