The evergreen entertainer Baadshah (1997) completed 25 years on August 27. Starring Shah Rukh Khan and Twinkle Khanna, the film has tremendous repeat value and is a hit on satellite. On its 25th anniversary, producer Ratan Jain of Venus Records And Tapes Pvt Ltd talked about the film and a lot more.

Was Shah Rukh Khan always the original choice for the role of Baadshah?
Yes, for sure. Shah Rukh Khan in and as Baadshah – yeh sochke hi film banayi gayi thi.
And what about Twinkle Khanna?
Earlier, we had considered Karisma Kapoor. She was almost finalized but then for some reason, she couldn’t come on board. Then we looked for a few options. Finally, we locked Twinkle Khanna.
The film has some crazy scenes, especially the ones shot in Baadshah’s office. Even without the VFX, it made for a great watch…
There was no VFX like it is right now. But we did have some effects. Honestly, in some scenes, we were not very happy with the effects. But we had to compromise. If there was VFX in those times, toh phir bahut kuch ho sakta tha (smiles).
Baadshah gets very nail-biting towards the climax. Yet, the shift of tonality didn’t affect the narrative…
To be honest with you, the second half was supposed to be something else. But then we changed the script. If you look at the film, the first half is very comic but in the second half, it gets a bit serious.
But we never felt like that as there was some comedy in the climax as well. For example, Baadshah rescuing his teammates in the end was funny…
Yes, and that is bound to happen when you have Shah Rukh Khan (smiles). That’s his forte.
Shah Rukh Khan has a lengthy, fast-paced monologue in the song ‘Main Toh Hoon Pagal’. Was it difficult to convince him for it?
You don’t need to convince Shah Rukh. He is ready to do anything. He’s talented as well as hard-working. He was informed about it and he was comfortable recording his portion.
What was the response in cinemas for Baadshah?
The response was amazing. But that time, Shah Rukh naya naya star bana tha. He was not very big and was growing. Nevertheless, he was very popular and audiences used to love him. And he loves the film. Whenever we talk, he speaks more about Baadshah than other films that we did together.
Moreover, it works big time on TV. Kids, especially, love the film a lot.
Nowadays, a lot of films are being re-released and are getting a great response. Would you like to re-release Baadshah? There’s a generation of moviegoers who haven’t seen the film as they weren’t born or were too young in 1999…
Recently, we re-released Khiladi (1992), Baazigar (1993) and Main Khiladi Tu Anari (1994). We haven’t released Baadshah yet. Maybe, we can make a bouquet of Shah Rukh’s films and re-release them. It would comprise Baazigar, Baadshah, Yes Boss (1997) and Josh (2000). We’ll definitely work on this idea.
