BHOPAL: Three men were arrested and a minor detained Wednesday for allegedly pushing stray cattle into a swollen river in Madhya Pradesh’s Satna district, killing many of the animals. The cruelty took place around 3pm Tuesday in the riverside Bamhor village in Nagaud, about 515km from Bhopal.
Videos of cows struggling to stay afloat in the floodwaters surfaced on social media the next day.A villager who shot the video filed a police complaint, following which a case was registered under MP‘s cow protection law. Within hours, all four suspects were rounded up.
“There’s a minor among the accused. The others are Beta Bagri, Ravi Bagri and Rampal Chowdhary, all in their 40s. They are residents of Hardua village,” Nagaud police station in-charge Ashok Pandey said. The accused were produced in court; the three men were remanded in jail and the minor was sent to a juvenile rehab shelter.
Initial reports indicated around 50 cows were pushed into the river and 15-20 had died, but the numbers have since been pared down. “According to locals, there were around a dozen stray cattle, of whom two to five were washed away in Satna river. The accused said they were fed up with the cattle damaging their farm, so they took this extreme step,” Pandey said, adding that the carcasses haven’t been found yet as the river is overflowing.
