Weitering rapt with new jacket
Blues defender Jacob Weitering looks stoked to have his first All-Australian blazer.
“It’s an honour and a privilege – I can’t believe it,” Weitering said.
He added that the Blues were ready to give their best in the finals.
“Sometimes the footy gods look after you and we’ve got a massive opportunity to go up to Brisbane – we are a motivated group,” Weitering said.
All-Australian backline named
Dempsey with the zinger
Dempsey scored some laughs in his Rising Star speech.
He also took some advice from Jez aka Cats full forward Jeremy Cameron.
“Jez told me to thank the AFL tribunal for ruling out Harley Reid and Sam Darcy,” Dempsey said.
Both Reid and Darcy were suspended during the season so couldn’t win the award.
He thanked his parents who have yet to miss a game yet in his career including interstate games.
“I wouldn’t be able to have so much fun without my club and that environment,” Dempsey said.
Ollie Dempsey wins AFL Rising Star
Geelong’s Ollie Dempsey has won the AFL Rising Star award.
“I can’t complain as an AFL footballer, it’s the best job in the world,” Dempsey said.
“I try to keep the old players young and have a smile on my face.”

Marnie with some truth
By Marnie Vinall
You know you’re at an AFL men’s event when… there’s no line for the women’s bathroom but one for the men’s.
That’s a W for the women in the room tonight.
‘He gave me some cheek’: Watson makes an impact
Hawks first-year forward Nick Watson makes an impression on people.
“He gave me some cheek the first time I met him which I thought was a bit ambitious,” Hawks coach Sam Mitchell said with a laugh.
Watson told Mark Howard he enjoyed the chance to express himself when celebrating goals.
“We need to get Sam in one of the [post victory] selfies – not sure when we will do that but we need to,” Watson said.

Nothing rowdy….yet
By Marnie Vinall
It could be that a lot of the players in the room are featuring in September but there’s yet to be any hint of rowdiness tonight.
Unlike the Brownlow where there are 16 teams worth of players enjoying the year that was.
So far… everyone is very well-behaved.
We’ll wait and see after the All Australians are announced and no nervousness for potential speeches left.

Butters wins courage award
Zak Butters has won the AFLPA most courageous player award but he has called out a special teammate.
“I want to thank Dan Houston who does my tie before every one of these events so thanks Dan,” Butters said to a loud laugh from the audience.
Butters added that he voted for Richmond’s Liam Baker for this award.
The AFLPA MVP
Reid wins best first year player
West Coast star Harley Reid has won his first AFL honour with the AFLPA best first-year player award.
“It has gone real quick, it feels like I just got drafted yesterday,” Reid said.
From Marnie Vinall at the awards: In case the tv didn’t catch it… that was almost a strut towards the stage for Harley Reid. That’s a man with a swag of (deserved) confidence about him!
