The South Sydney Rabbitohs have fined Latrell Mitchell $100,000 following the emergence of a photograph of him standing over a white substance earlier this month.
Mitchell will have to pay $20,000 of that fine immediately, with $80,000 suspended pending any further breach of his playing contract or wellbeing program.
The NRL have also issued Mitchell a one-match ban and a $20,000 fine and Mitchell will be required to undertake appropriate training, education and remediation.
Mitchell will serve his ban once he is fit and available to return from injury.
There is no suggestion the white powder in the photo was an illicit substance.
Mitchell fronted the South Sydney board on Tuesday and apologised for the embarrassment he has caused the club.
Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly said the club were confident this would be a “turning point”.
“This has been a very challenging time for everyone at South Sydney, including staff and management, coaches, players, members, supporters, and Latrell himself,” Solly said.
