Negri fisherman freed from drug trafficking charge – MASHAHER

SEREMBAN: A 43-year-old fisherman has been acquitted and discharged by the High Court here on a charge of trafficking 15.8kg of methamphetamine three years ago.

In freeing Seow Sun Fong on Thursday (Aug 29), Justice Datuk Rohani Ismail said the prosecution had not made a prima facie case against him.

“After assessing the evidence before the court and witness testimonies, the court finds that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the accused.

“The accused is hereby discharged and acquitted without his defence being called,” she said.

Seow was charged with committing the alleged offence at the car park of a resort in Port Dickson at 9.30am on March 1, 2021.

He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same legislation.

Offenders can be sentenced to death, or imprisoned for life and caned, upon conviction.

Five witnesses were called during the trial which began in November last year.

Justice Rohani also advised Seow to be careful when picking his friends in the future.

Nisa Hazwani Omar prosecuted while Seow was represented by Haresh Mahadevan and Ramzani Idris.
