HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM)– One of Harrisburg’s most used intersections is seeing significant safety improvements.
According to the City of Harrisburg, the Capitol Gateway project will start construction along Foster Street on Thursday, Sept 5.
Workers are set to enlarge the median by installing curb bump outs on the intersections of Front and Foster Streets and Second and Foster Streets, said the City. This will give pedestrians a place to stand if they cannot cross the street in time.
This project will continue through the end of October, then break for the winter due to PennDOT construction season guidelines and weather concerns, and finish in the spring, per the City.

“We are excited to finally begin work on the Capitol Gateway project,” said City of Harrisburg
Engineer Joel Seiders. “Between traffic coming into the city from the West Shore, leaving the
city from the Capitol Complex, or using beautiful Riverfront Park, this section of Harrisburg is
one of the most heavily traveled every day. Once this project is complete, it will be safer than
ever before to walk, bike, and drive in this area.”
It is important to note that one lane in each direction on Foster Street will remain open to traffic during construction.
According to the City, this project is part of its ‘Zero Vision initiative,’ which aims to eliminate traffic fatalities and injuries.
Additionally, cities around the country are implementing this strategy to ensure the safety of all road users.
