Javed Akhtar made a notable appearance at the Expresso event in Mumbai on Thursday, where he was accompanied by his daughter and acclaimed filmmaker Zoya Akhtar. The event provided a platform for the father-daughter duo to delve into an engaging discussion about the current landscape of Hindi cinema.

Javed also praised actor Alia Bhatt and spoke about her performance in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2022 film Gangubai Kathiawadi. Javed elaborated on Bhatt’s portrayal of the titular character, describing it as a standout performance that showcased her exceptional talent and versatility. He noted how her role in the film not only captured the essence of the historical figure but also resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.
Javed praised Alia’s recent performances and said, “With Gangubai, Alia, today, is perhaps one of the few finest actors.” He continued, with his characteristic cheekiness, “Actually, I feel she is the finest but I am being diplomatic so other heroines don’t get upset.”
Zoya Akhtar and Javed Akhtar have collaborated on several films, including Luck By Chance (2009), Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011), and Dil Dhadakne Do (2015). Zoya recently co-produced the documentary series Angry Young Men, which explores the lives and works of her father and his scriptwriter partner, Salim Khan. During the 1970s, the partnership of Salim and Javed Khan co-wrote 24 films in just 11 years, with 20 of them becoming blockbusters. Salim’s sons—Salman Khan, Arbaaz Khan, and Sohail Khan—also featured in the documentary.
