SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Officials with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provided an update on the renovation work on the downtown Salt Lake City Temple, which marches on through its fifth year of work.

In the most recent update, officials said the concrete transfer girders surrounding the temple’s west tower were completed. This allowed for the load of the temple’s west tower, as well as the east tower, to be transferred onto the new seismic foundation.

Workers have also moved forward on work along the entry pavilions on North Temple Street.

Meanwhile, in the southwest quadrant of Temple Square, crews are building a new foundation for the Seagull monument, which was placed in 1913.

The work on Temple Square is in its fifth year of renovation and is not expected to be completed until 2026. Once completed, the renovations will add several new buildings, provide infrastructure updates and address safety and earthquake concerns for the Temple itself.

Earlier this year, the completed work so far allowed for the return of the angel Moroni on top of the Salt Lake Temple’s east spire. The statue was removed from its perch in May 2020, shortly after it was damaged in the 5.7 magnitude earthquake that rocked the Wasatch Front.

Many areas of Temple Square remain closed to the public as renovations continue, however, the newly renovated Church Office Building Plaza and Main Street Plaza are now open. The two plazas were completed earlier this year with new waterproofing and snow-melting heating conduits.

“It’s an oasis from the storms of the noise and chaos … to feel the presence of the Savior,” said Jay Warnick, ground services manager for Church Headquarters Facilities.

The Church also added a new 92-flag pole art installation where the flags of officially recognized United Nations countries will fly and be rotated out every three months.
