Bostonians may have a reputation for their brashness, but they aren’t the rudest people in the country, according to a new study.
The language education platform Preply released a new study of the rudest cities in America, and Boston made the top 10, but it didn’t take the top spot.
The ranking is based on surveys of people around the country, the publication said. When Preply previously conducted the same study in 2022, Boston was named the fifth-rudest city. This year, it came in lower.
Here’s which cities are ruder than Boston and the key takeaways from the study.

Why are people in Boston so rude?
Preply’s study of rudest cities in America was conducted by surveying people about rude behaviors they witness in their city, the publication said.
“We included everything from residents’ politeness toward strangers and servers to inconsiderate usage of phones in public and more,” the study said.
To determine the ranking of which cities are rudest, the platform said it used scores to indicate higher frequencies of rudeness and averaged the scores for each city. Scores were calculated on a scale of 0 to 10, with 10 representing the rudest.
Boston had a total rudeness score of 8.35, while the rudest city, Miami, scored 9.88.
Some of the most common behaviors people around the country reported witnessing were lack of self-awareness, talking on speakerphone in a shared space and being loud in shared spaces.
