On the heels of an announcement that the Elmira Corning Regional Airport is receiving more than $479,000 in federal grant money for future improvements, U.S. Rep. Nicholas Langworthy announced the airport has been awarded an additional $949,577.
The grant announced in late July comes through the Federal Aviation Administration’s 2024 Airport Improvement Program and will be used to update the existing airport layout plan with a comprehensive master plan narrative and to update the pavement management plan, which includes a detailed pavement condition index survey.
The latest grant comes through the same program, and will support phase 1 of a critical project focused on reconstructing the lighting and signage on Runway 6/24 that have reached the end of their useful life, Langworthy said, as well as reinforcing the structural integrity of the paved runway, and reconstructing Taxiway A.
“The Elmira Corning Regional Airport is a vital transportation hub for our region, and this grant will ensure it continues to operate at the highest standards of safety and reliability,” Langworthy said in a news release.
The Airport Improvement Program provides grants to public agencies for the planning and development of public-use airports that are included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems.
This latest improvement project at the Elmira Corning Regional Airport involves reconstructing the existing lighting and signage on Runway 6/24, rehabilitating 8,000 feet of the runway, and reconstructing 570 feet of Taxiway A to extend their useful life and maintain safety.

The project is part of a long-term effort to upgrade and modernize the airport facility, which is owned and operated by Chemung County.
The airport did a major terminal overhaul and modernization in 2017 with the help of $58 million in federal and state money. Last year, the FAA awarded the airport another $4.38 million in grants for reconstruction of an apron on the east side of the airfield.
