Lyricist Manoj Muntashir has stepped forward to defend Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency, following its recent postponement due to a lack of censor certification. The film, originally scheduled for release on September 6, has been at the center of several controversies, particularly concerning its portrayal of the Sikh community. Several Sikh groups have called for a ban on the film, claiming it portrays Sikhs in a negative light.

Muntashir’s Defense: A Call for Understanding
On September 2, Muntashir posted a video on his social media accounts, urging the Sikh community to watch the film before making any judgments. He asserted that the film depicts historical facts, asking why these truths are being met with such resistance.
In his video, Muntashir questioned the objections raised against the film, particularly regarding its depiction of the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, Satwant Singh and Beant Singh. “The problem is that the killers of Indira Gandhi have been shown as Sikhs. So were Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, not Sikhs?” Muntashir asked.
He continued by addressing concerns over the portrayal of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, a controversial figure in Indian history, as a terrorist. “So was that brute who killed thousands of innocent people, not a terrorist?” Muntashir asked, stating that the film presents historical facts that should not be shied away from.
Respect for Sikh Community: A Misunderstanding?
Muntashir expressed disbelief that the Sikh community, known for its courage and commitment to truth, would be fearful of the facts shown in the film. “I am not ready to believe that the Sikhs who fearlessly stand up for the truth by chanting Ek Omkar Satnam got scared of the truth shown in a film,” he said. He praised the Sikh community as a “golden page in the history of India,” and highlighted the respect Sikhs command due to their bravery and the legacy of their Gurus.

The Postponement and Kangana’s Response
The postponement of Emergency has been a major setback for the film, which also stars Anupam Kher, Mahima Chaudhary, Milind Soman, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, and the late Satish Kaushik. As the controversy continues, the future of Emergency remains uncertain.
