NEW DELHI: The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) on Tuesday approved a new eye drops to help remove reading glasses. The Mumbai-based drugmaker, Entod Pharmaceuticals announced that it had received a final approval for PresVu eye drops and plans to introduce it in the domestic market in the first week of October.
The approval comes after an earlier recommendation by the Subject Expert Committee (SEC) of the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO).
PresVu is India’s first eye drop specifically designed to reduce reliance on reading glasses for those with presbyopia, a common age-related vision issue that typically affects individuals over the age of 40.
“This approval from the DCGI is a significant milestone in our mission to revolutionize eye care in India. PresVu is more than just a product; it’s a solution that can enhance the lives of millions by providing them with greater visual independence,” news agency PTI quoted Nikkhil K Masurkar, CEO of Entod Pharmaceuticals.
Industry estimates suggest that between 1.09 and 1.8 billion people worldwide are affected by presbyopia, a condition that naturally occurs with aging, leading to a diminished ability to focus on nearby objects.
Regarding future plans, Masurkar mentioned that the company will focus on meeting demand in domestic and emerging markets such as Africa and Southeast Asia. He also highlighted the goal of innovating products in India and then out-licensing them to the US market.
Entod Pharmaceuticals currently does not operate in the US market. “Most exports to the US are low-cost generics. We aim to change that by focusing on innovation and becoming a global leader in new developments, which we can then out-license to other countries. This is our future strategy,” Masurkar explained.
The company is committed to supplying medicines to regions where access and affordability are significant challenges, he added.
