She has stayed the course now for almost a quarter of a century—at the top! This is a feat unmatched by any actress in the history of Hindi cinema and makes Kareena Kapoor Khan, in her co-producer Ektaa R. Kapoor’s words, “Miss Legit Superstar.”
Kareena Kapoor Khan on working with Hansal Mehta, “We are very similar in our approaches, and we are both very instinctive”
In her 25th year as actor, Kareena is set to release a film with which she also turns producer—a Hindi-English whodunit, The Buckingham Murders. Ever since she made her debut with Refugee in 2000, Kareena has worked with almost every hero (and even heroine!) who mattered, apart from doing every kind and genre of movie and working with a mammoth range of directors. Subhash Ghai, Rohit Shetty, Karan Johar, Imtiaz Ali, R. Balki, Sujoy Ghosh, Sudhir Mishra, Kabir Khan, Prakash Jha, Madhur Bhandarkar, Mani Rathnam, Rajkumar Hirani, Priyadarshan, Sooraj R. Barjatya and more have all done films with her.
This gamut of directors is incredible and Hansal Mehta is now added to this list. I asked Kareena how her approach to acting needed to change not just because of her role but also because of the humongous variety in her directors and their schools of filmmaking and sensibilities and she got very candid as she replied, “A film is a director’s vision, and I have to look at it from that viewpoint. I have to understand what he wants. Every director creates an atmosphere, a milieu and vibe of a film and then of what he requires from an artiste. That is his vision. I have always believed that he will convey that vision to his actors. And while some actors may like to prepare for their characters, others may like to be instinctive!”
She added, “Hansal and I are very similar in our approaches, and we are both very instinctive. As I worked with him, I came to realize that, in his mind, he was already editing his film! And I also like being precise. That’s why Hansal’s characters come so much to life. I am very glad that I have worked with him. The way he has shaped the film and the way he made me comfortable in my role as a grieving mother, who is also a tough investigating police officer is something I cannot forget.”
Moved by what his actress had said about him, director Hansal Mehta also added, “You see, you have to trust your instinct. For that, the atmosphere on sets must be made very, very relaxed, because that’s what makes an actor look forward to every day’s shoot. And that’s when they too become relaxed and their instincts can work best!”
Raving in return about the first-ever big star he has worked with in his 30-year career, he said, “There is a quality that big stars possess, and I have experienced it the first time because I was working with Kareena! Her stardom just draws you to the screen, but it is her performances that have ensured her long stay! She is a powerhouse! An actor’s stardom may fluctuate in 25—or 50 years—but not her talent!”
