Sept. 4 (UPI) — Russian attacks overnight on the western Ukrainian city of Lviv killed at least seven people, including three children, and injured more than 30 others, the region’s governor said Wednesday.

The city, which is close to Ukraine’s border with Poland, came under attack overnight amid a Russian assault of drones and missiles nationwide.

Officials had warned residents of Lviv of the incoming attack and had informed them to head to shelter.

Gov. Maksym Kozytskyi of Lviv Oblast and Mayor Andrii Sadovyi have been updating residents of the death toll via Telegram over Wednesday morning with the latest figures showing seven people were killed in the assault.

A 9-year-old girl, a 14-year-old girl and a 50-year-old woman who worked as a nurse and mid-wife at a city clinic have been identified by the pair of officials as among the deceased. Kozytskyi confirmed that three children were killed.

Kozytskyi earlier said at least 38 people were injured, including five children. Sadovyi said 15 adults had been hospitalized. Five were in serious condition.

“Black day for our region,” Kozytskyi said.

The attack appeared to be centered on Konovaltsia and Kokorudza streets, damaging at least seven architectural monuments, all within the so-called buffer zone of the World Heritage site, a tool used to conserve important properties.

Among the damaged buildings was the regional Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Center being damaged, the governor said.

More than 70 windows of the building were shattered with frames blown apart by shockwaves from the explosions. Ceilings of six offices in the center had also collapsed, he said, posting images of the damaged historical building on Telegram.

“It is very fortunate that the guard and employees of the center are alive and uninjured,” he said, adding the building dates back to 1893.

Russia had previously attacked Lviv within the buffer zone in July 2023, which was the first assault amid the war on an area protected by the World Heritage Convention that prohibits signatories from committing any act of hostility against cultural property. Moscow had signed convention in 1988.

The attack came a day after dozens were killed and hundreds injured in Poltava in east-central Ukraine.

Russia had hit one of the city’s educational institutions and a hospital with ballistics, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense said.
